How do you choose your skincare? How do you KNOW it’s working with your skin? Do you TRUST your skincare? If you wanted to know something about ‘that’ moisturiser that everyone’s talking about or the % of an active ingredient would they tell you? What’s the point of all these questions? oops there’s another! #InterviewPractise *wink wink*.
Today I wanted to share with you guys the ‘Honesty For Your Skin’ promise. Honesty For Your Skin is a skincare range I am currently (right this moment!.. ) working on [eek -super excited to share this with you when the first 6 products are ready! Planned for April 16! Stay in touch here to be the first to know]. The whole reason for anything I do here on ‘Honesty For Your Skin’ is to be completely transparent with you lovelies about skincare, I want to create products that you can TRUST, products that are kind to skin and that work.
That’s why I am sharing with you the 6 promises behind the Honesty Skincare range.
1. THE PROMISE: PLANT BASED, BENEFICIAL ACTIVES
There is true magic in nature and that is what scientists are always trying to understand. Why can a plant stay green even in the sunshine? Why doesn’t it get damaged by UV like us? How can a cactus stay so ‘hydrated’ in the desert? #NatureHasTheAnswer
You could say a lot of things were natural, even things like silicon (from sand) & mineral oil because it comes from oil that’s made deep down in the earth. There’s natural, there’s naturally derived, there’s naturally identical ingredients that are made in the lab because it’s more sustainable and you just wouldn’t get enough from the natural source… The word ‘NATURAL’ is a big complicated thing. Natural can mean un-sustainable (think palm oil!) and it can also mean irritating and allergenic (just think of a nettle sting!). ‘Natural’ skincare can be pretty darn confusing, it’s not always a good promise.
That is why my promise to you is ‘plant based, beneficial actives’. That means if a plant extract has a benefit but also a ton of allergens, it’ll only be the beneficial active part used. If there is an active that needs to be made more concentrated to work, that’ll be what’s used, if that special natural ingredient is naturally unsustainable, it’ll be a sustainable alternative that’s used, if the naturally extracted ingredient is contaminated with irritants, then it’ll be a safe ‘clean’ version that used (check out this post on ‘Why You Should be Wary of Comfrey in Your Skincare’ to get the 101 on safe naturally inspired ingredients’).
Plant based active ingredients only is a food for your skin promise. We eat food that is naturally existing because it’s perfectly designed to give us the vitamins and minerals we need to be a #GirlBoss. We grow strong because of those naturally occurring nutrients that feed our bodies. We wouldn’t eat rock or plastic (well maybe the accidentally swallowed chewing gum) because we know it does NOTHING for our body, zilch nutritional value, our body has no purpose for it.
The Honesty Promise: Always plant based beneficial actives (they work with your already existing skin factory!).
2. THE PROMISE: PACKED WITH SKIN IDENTICAL INGREDIENTS
Why fight against something when you can work with it? Your skin knows what it’s doing, it has its own little skin factory set up with all the perfect ‘materials’ selected to keep it going. Skin identical ingredients are skin lovers that already exist in your skin! The best part about that is we know they do good, we know they are skin safe and we know our skin knows how to use them.
The Honesty Promise: Always packed full of skin identical ingredients.
3. THE PROMISE: FRAGRANCE FREE
If you have sensitive skin then you’ll likely already know the skin benefits of going fragrance free. Fragrances and essential oils contain known allergens, sensitisers and irritants and nothing about that says skin friend my pal!
These guys can be sneaky, you could be fine using them until one day – BAM!
Do you use a skincare range that has a ‘super recognisable’ scent, you could sniff it blind folded and you’d know what it was? Maybe you use something that gives a real ‘breathy’ POW when you’re in the shower… it’s highly, definitely likely that those products you use contain a good dose of allergens in them.
Allergens and sensitisers cause allergic skin reactions. Irritants cause skin redness, sensitivity and skin conditions like dermatitis.
The short of it all is they don’t need to be there – they don’t offer your skin a benefit.
The exception: There’s always one that likes to be different ‘eh. There are therapeutic effects in some essential oils, if you use the essential oil you get allergen+irritant+sensitiser+beneficial skin ingredient, they kinda look like they are fighting against each other ‘eh! Some are good, some are bad – so do they cancel each other out? Why use the essential oil when you can use the ‘extracted’ beneficial ingredient. Chamomile, that one is a skin soothing, anti-inflammatory skin lover, the extract responsible is Bisabolol. So why use the whole Chamomile essential oil when you could use just the bisabolol bit?
The Honesty Promise: Never with artificial fragrance or essential oils.
4. THE PROMISE: NO ALCOHOL
There are a load of skincare products that contain alcohol – the same kinds that you’ll find in your fav’ alcoholic beverage and in your kitchen cleaning products. So what’s the 101 on alcohol in skincare? There are good and bad types, the bad-boys of the alcohol in skincare world are Methanol, Ethanol, SD alcohol 40, Isopropyl alcohol, Benzyl alcohol [get a gander of this infographic from Nicki at FutureDerm, it explains the good and bad alcohols perfectly!].
The thing about alcohol is it fights against your skin. Alcohol is not skin identical. Do you remember the last time you had a stubborn bit of grease on a pan and you had to ‘bust out’ the hard-core Mr.Muscle type cleaning fluids? Next thing you know it’s all sparkles and that ‘stubborn stain’ is long gone down the plug-hole. That’s because ingredients like alcohol cut through anything oily. The thing is your skin is naturally oily, every cell in your body has an ‘oily’ layer around it (in science it gets the name ‘lipid bilayer’), even if your skin doesn’t LOOK oily, this ‘high-tech’ skin protector is still there, when it’s not, dry skin happens!
Alcohol dries out skin.
There’s also the point about it being really good at killing stuff.. good AND bad, it’s not a fussy guy! Flash yourself back to your last cowboy movie when they pulled out the hipflask to douse their wounds with before stitching them up – alcohol sanitises because it kills stuff. Have you ever used a hand-sanitizer? Hand sanitizer is HIGH-DOSE alcohol, it’s that 65-85% alcohol that kills everything on your hands.
Alcohol kills bad AND good bacteria on your skin. There’s not much that can ‘live’ in alcohol.
The Honesty Promise: No ‘bad’ alcohols in sight. FULL STOP.
5. THE PROMISE: INGREDIENTS OF QUALITY
Say you’ve found aloe containing products to be super soothing and healing for your skin. Aloe is your new go-to skincare ingredient and you’re always looking for it when you’re on the hunt for new skincare. You might even know to check that ‘Aloe Barbadensis’ is on the ingredients list’. Here is the thing, one Aloe plant extract can be completely different to the next. It’s like saying ALL dark chocolate is the same. We know it’s not, that bit depends on the cocoa content ‘eh.
The thing with Aloe vera is there are a LOAD of different ways it can be made into the Aloe that you’ll find in your skincare. The stuff that’s going to show you skin love is in the middle of the aloe leaf, it’s the juicy bit that gets called the ‘fillet’. Some ‘Aloe vera’ will use the ‘whole leaf’ so when it says ‘Aloe vera’ your actually getting less ‘skin active’ stuff.
This happens with other ingredients too, ingredients won’t be purified fully and fillers with no ‘role’ other than to take up space will be used. Oh and sometimes they will be put in, in super tiny amounts JUST to make a claim, but with NO benefit for your skin – crazy I know!
The Honesty Promise: Skincare with ONLY the best quality ingredients, at skin beneficial amounts. No fillers, no corners cut!
6. THE PROMISE: NOTHING THAT DOESN’T HAVE A SKIN PURPOSE
This is all about your skin, and there shouldn’t be anything else stealing the show *wink wink*. That means no colorants, no texturizing additives, nothing that’s FIRST purpose isn’t to benefit your skin.
The Honesty Promise: Designed only to better your skin.
